The Doctor Is In... Candescent

by Dori Fern

When it comes to lighting restoration, they don't make them much brighter than Peter Romeo, the man otherwise known as the Lamp Doctor.  Head to his Coney Island Avenue store, open since 1971, to buy one of a kind floor models, or bring your own lamps in for refurbishing.  Romeo's unique brilliance is perhaps most evident in the lamps he makes from found objects -- model ships, sewing machines, gumball machines, even a Ken Doll.  A Beverly Hills restaurateur recently discovered the Lamp Doctor online and hired him to turn old bowling pins into lighting fixtures for her restaurant.  Does the 64-year-old craftsman (who was also commissioned to restore the lighting at the lefferts homestead in Prospect Park) have any plans to retire?  "Are you kidding," he says, "I would pay somebody to let me do what I do."
